Henry Winkler arrived at the audition for Happy Days in 1973 with a secret that almost cost him his career. He couldn't read the script. His undiagnosed dyslexia forced him to improvise lines on the spot to hide the fact that the words were dancing before his eyes. The producers were looking for a tough, tall guy, but they got a five-foot-two New Yorker with a Jewish background who radiated a different kind of energy. That day, the character of Arthur Fonzarelli was born.

The success of his performance was so intense that the show went from being a family comedy to a vehicle for his personal showcase. In 1974, the whole world wanted to be The Fonz. But that leather jacket quickly turned into a maximum-security cell. Winkler spent a decade playing the same man while the rest of the industry relentlessly typecast him as the rebel with the pompadour.

And the phone stopped ringing.

The retreat in the production office

When acting offers dried up in the early 1980s, Winkler did not sit around waiting for a miracle. He realized that if Hollywood didn't want his face, it might want his ideas. He founded his own production company and began building projects from the ground up. In 1985 he premiered MacGyver, a series that celebrated ingenuity over brute force and stayed on the air for seven full seasons.

His work behind the camera helped him make ends meet, but his desire to act remained intact. He directed films such as Memories of Me in 1988 and produced hits for teen audiences like Sabrina, the Teenage Witch in the late nineties. He was already a respected businessman who had managed to bury the ghost of his television past deep in the closet of memories.

But critical recognition as a serious actor was still an unfinished business.

The comeback in the cable era

Television in the twenty-first century gave him a second life through quirky comedy and tender pathos. In 2003, he joined the cast of Arrested Development as Barry Zuckerkorn, an incompetent lawyer who blew up every trace of the elegance of his younger years. It was the first step in proving that his gift for dry humor was an underrated asset to the major studios in Los Angeles.

The defining turning point came in 2018 with the premiere of Barry on HBO. Playing Gene Cousineau, a mediocre and self-centered acting teacher, allowed him to explore a vulnerability he had never shown on screen. He won his first Emmy Award in 2018 after decades of failed nominations and long waits on the red carpet. Younger audiences no longer associated him with motorcycles, but with the mastery of a veteran who knows how to laugh at his own profession.

He achieved it at seventy-two years old.

For a long time, Winkler has balanced his work on set with a prolific career as a children's book author. His books about Hank Zipzer have sold more than four million copies in various international markets. In 2023, he closed the chapter on Barry with a fourth season that confirmed his character's status as one of the pillars of prestige television fiction. His production deal with various streaming platforms ensures that his name will keep appearing in closing credits for a long time.

The series Barry aired its final episode on May 28, 2023, with a total of thirty-two episodes produced.
