Synopsis of Mr Inbetween

Ray Shoesmith is a former soldier turned hired gun who lives in the suburbs of Sydney. His job is to eliminate whoever he's assigned to, but he also tries to hold together the rest of his life: being a father to Brittany, the daughter he had with his ex-wife, and being a loving boyfriend to Ally. He also looks after his brother Bruce, who is seriously ill, and covers for his friend Gary when needed. All the while, he obeys without question the orders of his boss, Freddy. The series, created, written and starring Scott Ryan, airs on FX and follows a man trying to keep all these pieces from breaking.

«Father. Ex-husband. Boyfriend. Criminal.»

Trivia about Mr Inbetween

The series is a spin-off of the 2005 film The Magician, which Scott Ryan created, wrote and starred in as Ray Shoesmith.

It was originally commissioned by FX Australia as its first original drama production, but ended up premiering in Australia on Showcase after that channel closed.

The critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes notes that the first season's uneven editing is quickly forgiven thanks to its tension and Scott Ryan's performance.

The Boston Globe pointed out that the gold-hearted killer is not a new trope and cited HBO's Barry as a recent example of moral engagement with audiences.

New York Times critic Mike Hale called the third season a small marvel of sustained tone.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that the second season's episodes, running 23 to 25 minutes, pack more into each episode than most hour-long American dramas.

Nash Edgerton kept Scott Ryan as the lead for a decade, even though several production companies and executives preferred a more recognizable actor; Ryan had been working as a taxi driver for ten years.

Chika Yasumura, the daughter of Nash Edgerton, landed the role of Brittany after an audition, even though she had never acted before; Edgerton had doubts because he feared that turning her down could strain family life together.
