In 1989 the Cannes Film Festival fell silent before an actress from New Jersey who barely stood five feet tall. Laura San Giacomo arrived on the French Riviera with sex, lies, and videotape under her arm. That Steven Soderbergh film cost just over a million dollars and ended up winning the Palme d'Or.
San Giacomo played Cynthia, the sister who disrupted the fragile balance of a dull marriage. The role earned her a Golden Globe nomination and praise from international critics. But she didn't want to become the flavor of the month that magazines of the time tried to manufacture.
She didn't set out to be America's girlfriend.
Shortly after, she accepted the role of Kit De Luca in Pretty Woman during the filming of 1990. It was a purely professional decision. Gary Marshall needed someone who could hold her own opposite Julia Roberts without disappearing from the screen. San Giacomo brought a street-smart energy that balanced the fairy-tale feel of the Disney production.
In the mid-nineties, film started offering her supporting roles that didn't interest her much. So she decided to try her luck on the small screen. In 1997 she signed on to star in Dame un respiro. The series ran for seven seasons and racked up 148 episodes on NBC.
Playing Maya Gallo gave her a financial security that independent film couldn't guarantee. During those years, San Giacomo became one of the most recognizable faces on American television. She was paid to make people laugh while her personal life took a different direction with the birth of her son Mason in 1996.
Motherhood dramatically changed her priorities.
Since then, she has been involved in creating inclusive schools in California. She didn't do it for publicity, as she rarely gave interviews on the subject. She focused on improving education for children with cerebral palsy. Her career took a voluntary back seat while she chose projects that would keep her close to home in Los Angeles.
In 2016 she joined the cast of NCIS to play Dr. Grace Confalone. It was a recurring role she kept for several seasons. Her ability to convey authority with a single look remained intact. Producers knew her presence raised the dramatic stakes of any interrogation scene.
She appeared on the series Animal Kingdom for 2017, playing Morgan Wilson. He was a shady character that suited her talent for playing women with secrets. She never needed big technical tricks to convince viewers that her character was hiding something dangerous beneath the surface.
And audiences kept responding.
In 2022, she joined the cast of the series Vaya Santa Claus for Disney Plus. She played La Befana, an Italian Christmas witch, reconnecting with her family roots in the story. Filming for the second season wrapped in 2023, directed by Jason Winer, with an estimated budget of $15 million per episode.
