Mark Ivanir was born in 1968 in the city of Chernivtsi, in the former Soviet Union. When he was four years old, his family moved to Israel, and there he began a training that had little to do with red carpets. Before becoming an actor, he served in the Israeli army and took part in intelligence missions to help Ethiopian Jews leave the country.
That military discipline shows in the way he works.
After leaving the military, he studied at a circus school in Paris. That gave him complete physical control, which he later applied in his first stage work in Tel Aviv. But the real turning point came in 1993 when Steven Spielberg cast him in a role in Schindler's List.
That shoot in Poland changed his career forever. Spielberg called him back years later for The Terminal and to provide a voice for The Adventures of Tintin. Ivanir became the go-to face for Eastern European characters in Hollywood, but he always sought something more than the stereotype of the Russian thug.
He speaks six languages with complete fluency. This ability allows him to work on productions from Germany, Israel, the United States or the United Kingdom without language being a barrier. In 2012, he starred in The Last Concert alongside Christopher Walken and Philip Seymour Hoffman. In that film, he played a violinist, and audiences forgot they were used to seeing him holding a gun.
Nobody shoots as much as he does.
In 2020, he played Misha in the Netflix series Away. His character was a veteran cosmonaut dealing with vision loss in space. It was a restrained, technical job that moved away from the action roles the average viewer was used to. As a result, his name began to carry more weight among specialized critics.
But Ivanir's pace of work did not slow down after that space project. In 2022, he joined the cast of the series The Recruit, playing a high-level operative. The industry values him because he is able to bring humanity to characters who on paper seem cold or mechanical.
In 2023, he took part in the espionage thriller Heart of Stone alongside Gal Gadot. It is the kind of big-budget film that he balances with much more intimate European projects. For Ivanir, what matters is the script and not the size of the trailer he is given on the film set.
His work capacity is almost mathematical.
In 2024, he shot the miniseries The Auschwitz Tattooist, in which he plays Baretski. The project is based on the novel of the same name and required a very rigorous level of historical research from the entire artistic team. Filming took place mainly on location in Slovakia to recreate the atmosphere of the era.
He has more than 100 credits in television and film since he began his professional career in the early nineties. He lives in Los Angeles with his family and keeps an extremely low public profile outside the mandatory promotion for his films. His contract for his participation in the second season of The Recruit was signed under strict confidentiality clauses regarding the script.
