Synopsis of Scrubs

Scrubs follows John Michael «J.D.» Dorian's first day as an intern at Sacred Heart Teaching Hospital. Created by Bill Lawrence and starring Zach Braff, the series airs on NBC. J.D. narrates each episode in the first person and, while trying to prove he has what it takes to be a doctor, escapes into exaggerated daydreams that clash with the pressures of everyday work. Along with his best friend Turk and other residents, he will have to learn to treat patients, get along with demanding superiors and find his place among white coats and hallways. Each episode weaves together several stories linked by the lead character's reflections on friendship and the profession.

«Laughter is the best medicine... Especially when it's your first day as a doctor.»

Trivia about Scrubs

The idea was loosely inspired by the experiences of Dr. Jonathan Doris as an internal medicine resident at Brown Medical School, the university attended by Bill Lawrence's friend.

The chest X-ray shown at the end of the opening credits was hung upside down for most of the first five seasons, and the mistake became something of a legend.

Zach Braff directed seven episodes, including the hundredth, «My Way Home», which won a Peabody Award in April 2007.

Instead of trailers, the entire cast was assigned old hospital rooms, with a small budget to decorate them.

The first eight seasons were filmed at North Hollywood Medical Center, a decommissioned hospital located in Valley Village, Los Angeles.

The Writers Guild of America strike of 2007–2008 cut the seventh season of «Scrubs» down to eleven episodes, before the series moved from NBC to ABC.

NBC decided not to renew «Scrubs» after its seventh season, but ABC picked up the series and aired an eighth season that Bill Lawrence had initially planned as the last.

In July 2025, ABC announced a new series of «Scrubs» starring Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke as regulars, with Bill Lawrence as executive producer.
