Synopsis of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Will Smith stars in this NBC sitcom, created by Andy and Susan Borowitz, in which he plays a fictionalized version of himself. Will is a teenager from the streets of Philadelphia who gets in trouble after a run-in with a dangerous gang in his neighborhood. His mother, worried about his safety, sends him against his will to live in Bel-Air, an upscale residential neighborhood in Los Angeles, with his wealthy aunt and uncle. There he lives with his uncle Philip Banks, a lawyer, his aunt Vivian and his four cousins. Will's lifestyle clashes head-on with that of a well-off family that has nothing in common with his. The series thus explores the coexistence of two very different worlds, as the young man tries to adjust to a life he didn't choose and his family learns to live with him. The top-quality education his mother can't afford is, at its core, the reason for it all.

Trivia about The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Benny Medina turned the story's white, wealthy family into a Black, wealthy family, in order to explore colorism and class differences within the Black community itself.
Quincy Jones handed Will Smith the script for a failed Morris Day pilot he had produced, and challenged him to audition on the spot in front of Brandon Tartikoff.
Will Smith and James Avery are the only actors who appear in every episode of the series, which ran for 148 episodes over six seasons.
The series featured more than forty celebrity guest stars, and seasons 1 and 6 had the most, with more than ten in each.
In 1994, Warner Bros. acquired the distribution rights to the series, which it still holds.
In seasons 2 through 4, the closing credits stopped featuring music and still images and instead aired over the episode's own production bloopers.
The theme song, titled "Yo Home to Bel Air," was written and performed by Will Smith under his stage name, The Fresh Prince, while the music was handled by Quincy Jones.
Janet Hubert stopped playing Vivian Banks after the third season, and Daphne Maxwell Reid took over the role from the fourth; in 2020, Hubert and Will Smith spoke for the first time in 27 years during the reunion special.
