The Banks Family Money and the Reality of the Set

Karyn Parsons went to the audition for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air thinking she didn't fit the profile. She was working as a waitress in Los Angeles, and money was tight in her bank account. The producers were looking for a girl who exuded elitism, but she showed up with a much more down-to-earth attitude.

In 1990, NBC launched the series, and Parsons’s life changed completely. She played Hilary Banks for six seasons and 146 episodes. The character required a mix of naivety and snobbery, which the actress polished in every take to keep her from coming across as unlikable.

Hilary Banks was never just a pretty face in expensive clothes.

Parsons built the role by observing wealthy Californian society. But after the series ended in 1996, the industry tried to typecast her in similar roles. The weight of such a popular comedy is often a hard burden for any supporting actor to shake off.

In 1995, she appeared in the movie Major Payne alongside Damon Wayans. The film earned 30 million dollars in the United States and gave her a presence beyond the Banks family set. But movies did not offer her the same opportunities as television, and interesting scripts became scarce.

Reinventing History

Parsons married director Alexandre Rockwell in 2003. That same year, she made a decision that moved her permanently away from the Hollywood spotlight. She founded Sweet Blackberry, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educational animation.

Her goal was to rescue stories of African American citizens that official education had overlooked. Because Parsons understood that her visibility could help fund short-run, non-commercial educational projects. The first piece focused on Henry Box Brown, an enslaved man who escaped by mail in a wooden crate.

And her commitment to education paid off.

In 2005, she produced The Journey of Henry Box Brown, narrated by Alfre Woodard. Other titles followed, such as Garrett’s Gift in 2007, which featured the voice of Queen Latifah. These short films reached libraries and schools across the country, breaking away from commercial fiction.

Parsons had no interest in the red carpet. She preferred complete creative control over her historical stories. In 2010, her production company was already a leader in the educational entertainment sector, with awards from specialized critics.

Moving Into Young Adult Literature

Writing was always present in her free time between shoots. In 2019, she published her first novel, How High the Moon. The book is set in the American South during the 40s and deals with themes such as racism and family identity.

Literary critics praised her ability to handle raw subjects without losing the sensitivity needed for young audiences. But Parsons did not stop at pure historical fiction. In 2020, she released Flying Free, which tells the story of aviator Bessie Coleman in the form of an illustrated book.

Her creative process is slow and meticulous.

She prefers to research historical archives before writing the first line of dialogue. In 2023, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers published her novel Clouds over California at 288 pages. The distribution deal was closed for a five-figure sum before she finished the manuscript.
