Isaac Hayes took the Oscars stage in 1972 with a solid gold chain across his bare chest. He had no interest in fitting into Hollywood's rigid dress code, because he had already invented his own visual style in the studios of Memphis.
Before becoming the center of attention, he worked behind the scenes as a songwriter for Stax Records. He wrote songs for others while piling up bills and frustrations in equal measure in an office without air conditioning.
Together with David Porter, he wrote hits such as Soul Man for the duo Sam & Dave. That partnership was a hit-making machine that operated with almost military mathematical precision throughout the 1960s.
In 1969, he decided he no longer wanted to write for others and released the album Hot Buttered Soul. The record had only four songs but ran forty-five minutes of hypnotic, dense music.
He tested the patience of radio programmers of the time.
The offer for Shaft came in 1971 with a frustrated condition. Hayes wanted the lead role of John Shaft, but the producers only trusted him to do the soundtrack.
That decision earned him an Oscar and two Grammy Awards in the same season. The film's main theme sold more than two million copies within a few months, making him a top-tier global media figure.
But film was not just music for him. In 1974, he starred in Truck Turner, a gritty action film in which he played a bounty hunter on the streets of Los Angeles.
And the gamble paid off.
John Carpenter recruited him in 1981 to play the Duke in Escape from New York. His physical presence filled the screen without the need for complex dialogue, because his deep voice did all the heavy lifting.
In 1997, his career unexpectedly found a new audience on cable television. He gave his voice to the character Chef in the animated series South Park and connected with a young generation that knew nothing of his past in soul music.
That chapter ended abruptly in 2006 after a statement full of personal tensions. The show's creators and the musician ended their professional relationship over a satirical episode that parodied Scientology.
He never again had a role of that significance in mainstream media.
In his final years, he managed his legacy and watched hip-hop sample his classic compositions. Artists like Public Enemy and Wu-Tang Clan built their hits on the foundations of his 1970s string arrangements.
He died at his home in Memphis in August 2008 after suffering a stroke while on a treadmill. His heirs maintain control of a catalog that includes 1,157 registered samples on other records through 2024.
