Daryl Mitchell started out rapping. Before stepping onto a film set, he was part of Groove B. Chill, a hip hop group that had its moment in the late 1980s. In 1990 he made his film debut in House Party. That urban comedy opened the doors of commercial television wide for him.
Throughout the 1990s, his face became a familiar sight in American homes. He appeared in The John Larroquette Show between 1993 and 1996, playing Dexter Walker. But mass recognition beyond the country's borders came with pure science fiction.
In 1999, he played Tommy Webber in Galaxy Quest, a parody of Star Trek that ended up becoming a cult classic. He shared the screen with Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman. That role as a child pilot trapped in an adult's body secured him a place in the world of major studio productions.
And then everything changed on a country road.
In November 2001, Mitchell was in a motorcycle accident. He lost control in the darkness of a rural road, and the impact left him with permanent paralysis from the waist down. He was 36 years old and had a career on the rise that seemed to come to an abrupt halt.
Many people thought his time on screen would end there, because Hollywood rarely knows what to do with a wheelchair user. But Mitchell did not accept forced retirement. Chris Rock was one of the friends who most insisted he return to work right away.
In 2002, he joined the cast of the series Ed, playing Eli Goggins. Mitchell decided that his new physical reality would not be the center of his characters, but would be a visible part of his professional identity. In 2009, he produced and starred in the comedy Brothers for Fox alongside Michael Strahan.
The gamble paid off.
His period of greatest financial and professional stability came with the NCIS franchise. Between 2014 and 2021, he played Patton Plame in NCIS: New Orleans. He was the unit's computer specialist, a technical role that allowed him to film more than 150 episodes in a row.
In 2018, he decided to diversify his career and joined the world of the walking dead in Fear the Walking Dead. There, he played Wendell, a survivor who used an armored wheelchair modified for combat. His character remained active in the storyline for five years.
In 2023 he wrapped up his role in the eighth and final season of the AMC series. Filming of his last scenes took place in Savannah, Georgia. The production officially concluded that narrative arc in November of that same year.
