Brenda Strong is a voice before it is a face to millions of viewers. Mary Alice Young's suicide in 2004 changed the course of ABC and put the actress in a strange position. She narrated her friends' lives from beyond the grave while her character lay in a coffin.
She was born in Brightwood, Oregon, and her first contact with public exposure was not a script. She won the Miss Arizona pageant in 1980. But that was just a way to pay for her studies at Arizona State University.
The crown was never the real goal.
She arrived in Los Angeles in the mid-1980s. Back then, casts were filled with athletic types, and she fit right in. She appeared on St. Elsewhere and MacGyver without making much noise. Those were years of technical learning and failed auditions in offices with worn-out carpet.
In 1996 she appeared on Seinfeld. She played Sue Ellen Mischke, the heiress who walked around New York without a bra. That comedic role in the greatest sitcom in history gave her a visibility that drama had denied her.
The industry took note of her height and physical presence. Strong stands 1.83 meters tall. That stature let her dominate a scene effortlessly, but it also kept her away from certain leading men who were self-conscious about their height.
She was paid for voice-over sessions while her Desperate Housewives castmates dealt with the tabloid press. She recorded her lines alone in a dark booth, far from the chaos of the Universal Studios sets. She won two Emmy Awards for that invisible work as a narrator.
Because her career didn't stop in the fictional suburbs.
In 2012, she took on the challenge of joining the world of Dallas. Playing Ann Ewing meant living in the shadow of a legendary series. She did it with a restraint that contrasted with the over-the-top acting of the 1980s (the era when the original series dominated the world).
Strong decided that acting wasn't enough to understand the business. In 2020 she directed several episodes of 13 Reasons Why, a series where she also played Nora Walker. Her move behind the camera was no veteran's whim but a need for technical control over the shot.
Before directing, she studied every stage of post-production. She is as interested in editing and color correction as she is in acting. So she began balancing her film shoots with her work as a yoga instructor for women dealing with fertility issues.
The industry is a narrow place for anyone who only knows how to do one thing.
In 2024, she appeared in the Netflix series Griselda as Rebecca. At this stage of her life, she is not seeking full leading-role status. She prefers supporting roles with narrative weight or projects where she can sit in the producer's chair.
The actress lives in Los Angeles and keeps a low profile at industry events. In 2023 she filmed her role in the comedy The Neighborhood, playing Jeanine. Her contract for that production included standard union clauses and three days of location shooting.
