Heather Graham was eighteen when Gus Van Sant put her in a car in Drugstore Cowboy. It was no fairy-tale start. Her strictly Catholic parents disapproved of their daughter moving among fictional syringes in Portland in 1989.
But the industry noticed those eyes.
That first performance earned her a nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards. Still, the young actress spent almost a decade finding the project that would pull her out of the circuit of forgotten supporting roles. She appeared in Twin Peaks as Annie Blackburn and in minor productions that never quite took off at the box office.
In 1997, she landed the role of Rollergirl in Boogie Nights. Paul Thomas Anderson asked her not to take off her skates in nearly any of her scenes. Graham accepted the challenge because she understood that her character's fragility lay in that precarious balance on eight wheels.
She earned just over $15,000 for that role, which put her on every Hollywood cover.
And the phone started ringing nonstop.
Her massive commercial success came with Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me in 1999. Critics were harsh on the sequel, but it grossed 312 million dollars worldwide. Graham became trapped in the image of the fun blonde who served as a foil to whatever leading man came along.
She tried to break that pattern with Desde el infierno in 2001, alongside Johnny Depp. The film performed well at the box office but didn't convince casting directors to see her as a character actress for heavy dramas. So she decided that if the system wasn't going to change, she would have to create her own content.
In 2009, she appeared in The Hangover Part III as Jade. It was a brief but crucial role in the plot of one of the most profitable comedies of the decade.
And then came a relative silence.
Graham used those years of lower media exposure to learn screenwriting. She did not want to depend on agents who only wanted a certain look for mother roles or love interests for actors twenty years older than her.
In 2018, she wrote and directed Half Magic. The film explores female sexuality and personal empowerment without the usual filters of the major Los Angeles studios. It was her way of responding to an industry that tends to sideline women once they hit their forties.
During 2023, she starred in Suitable Flesh under the direction of Joe Lynch. This horror film adapts a story by H.P. Lovecraft, in which she plays a psychiatrist who suffers a body possession. The project was shot in just twenty days on a tight independent film budget.
In 2024, she premiered Chosen Family at the Miami Film Festival. Graham not only stars in this story about a yoga teacher searching for life balance but also writes and directs the feature.
The production of this latest film had an estimated budget of under $5 million.
