Gillian Vigman doesn't need an Oscar to be a familiar face in millions of homes. In 1967, she was born in New Jersey, and from her earliest steps in acting she understood that her place was in the effective work of the supporting role. Her training at The Groundlings in Los Angeles gave her the tools she needed to master improv.
For decades, the industry has used her as the anchor of normalcy amid everyone else's chaos. Vigman has a gift for projecting common sense while everything around her falls apart.
Comedy is a precision craft.
In 2003, she joined the cast of MADtv for its ninth season. The experience was brief but decisive in understanding the rhythms of American television. Yet her real gold mine initially lay not in scripted fiction but in advertising.
More than a hundred commercials for global brands helped her fund a career that many others would have abandoned due to a lack of stability. During that period, she earned the nickname the queen of commercials.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2009, she played Stephanie in The Hangover. That role as Phil's wife (Bradley Cooper) was repeated in the franchise's two sequels in 2011 and 2013. Her job was to deliver dry, direct lines so the male leads could shine in their self-destructive spiral.
People often forget that her involvement in the industry goes well beyond standing in front of the camera. In 2006, she created and produced the series Sons & Daughters for ABC. The project grew out of an improv pilot that she helped write, based on real family dynamics.
In 2011, she appeared in the comedy New Girl as Kim. That icy, domineering boss role moved away from the family-mom image Hollywood had assigned her by default.
So she decided to explore the world of animation, with remarkable results.
In 2020, she began voicing Dr. T’Ana in the series Star Trek: Lower Decks. Her character is a Caitian doctor with a volatile temper, a far cry from her usual live-action roles. The series reached its fifth season, confirming that her voice is as recognizable as her physical features.
In 2021, she joined the cast of Sorority Life on HBO Max. In this production, she plays Carol Finkle and maintains her status as an essential supporting actress who keeps the plots of the younger characters going.
During 2023, the production of Star Trek: Lower Decks renewed her contract to ensure the continuity of T’Ana's character in the animated universe. Her voice sessions are usually recorded in Los Angeles recording studios under strict confidentiality protocols.
