Synopsis of Californication

Hank Moody is a New York novelist who has lost his inspiration following the success of his latest book, God Hates Us All. The novel becomes the movie A Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and Hank agrees to move with Karen, his partner, and Becca, his daughter, from New York to Los Angeles while it shoots. He soon discovers that the adaptation has little to do with his book, and the city's atmosphere pushes him into a spiral of sex, alcohol, and drugs that strains his relationship with Karen. Charlie Runkle, his best friend and also his agent, accompanies him through this stage. Created by Tom Kapinos and aired on Showtime, the series starring David Duchovny and Natascha McElhone explores how a writer in crisis tries to balance his personal life with his family.

The character Lew Ashby is believed to be based on producer Rick Rubin, and the scenes at Ashby's house were actually filmed at Rubin's house.
The second season finale, which aired on December 14, 2008, drew 615,000 viewers, with 937,000 counting the entire night.
