Pamela Adlon doesn't have a conventional voice. It's raspy, it sounds like tobacco and New York streets. In 1982, she appeared in Grease 2 playing Dolores Rebchuck, and from that moment on it was clear she didn't fit the mold of the Hollywood ingenue.
The business was never kind to her.
For years, her bank account depended on a recording booth. In 2002, she won an Emmy Award for lending her voice to Bobby Hill in King of the Hill. That job allowed her to raise her three daughters while the live-action industry shut its doors on her for not being young enough or compliant enough.
Because her true refuge for decades was not in front of the camera. She voiced characters in Recess and in dozens of video games because anonymity was more profitable than exposure. That invisibility ended when she began working with the FX network on projects that aimed for gritty realism.
In 2006, she starred in Lucky Louie and soon after joined the writing team of Louie. There she learned that television could be a personal diary if you had the courage to show your miseries. That period gave her a grounded understanding of production from the inside.
In 2016, she premiered Better Things.
It was her total declaration of independence.
Adlon wrote, produced, and directed the vast majority of the episodes of this series, which ran until 2022. She wasn't after aesthetic beauty but domestic truth. On set, she banned mirrors for the actors because she wanted the sweat and exhaustion to be real on screen.
The series became a manual on unfiltered motherhood. But Adlon didn't just act. She oversaw everything from the catering to the music selection for each episode. Her signature is present in every detail of the production design across all five seasons.
In 2024, she premiered Babes at the SXSW festival. It was her first feature film as a director, and critics praised her ability to shoot childbirth and bodily fluids without slipping into sentimentality. She did it with a direct directing style and no unnecessary frills.
The film was shot in New York on a tight schedule of 24 intensive working days.
