Odessa Zion Segall Adlon decided to drop her father's surname, director Felix O. Adlon, long before the industry started slapping her with the nepo baby label. She didn't want to disown her lineage (her mother is the creator of Pamela Adlon), but she needed her name in the credits to stand on its own. In the end, she went with Odessa A’zion.
Her first notable appearance came in 2017 with a supporting role on the series Nashville. On that shoot, she realized her style didn't fit the polished image of traditional California teen stars. She brought a more electric, less manufactured energy.
Odessa doesn't ask permission to make an entrance.
In 2019, she starred in the sitcom Fam alongside Nina Dobrev. The series was canceled after just one season, but it helped casting directors notice her talent for quick comebacks. A’zion handles sarcasm with a natural ease that seems inherited from her mother's scripts on Better Things.
The real turning point came in 2020 with the release of Grand Army on Netflix. Her portrayal of Joey Del Marco was a total exercise in emotional exposure. The story of a sexual assault at a Brooklyn high school demanded an actress who wasn't afraid to come across as unlikable and vulnerable at the same time. International critics praised her ability to hold three-minute close-ups where silence carried more weight than dialogue.
And the risk was worth it.
But the show's success did not push her toward superhero blockbusters. Odessa preferred independent film and edgier stories. In 2022, she starred in Good Girl Jane, playing a teenager who spirals into drug use. The shoot was an immersive experience in isolation that earned her the Best Performance award at the Tribeca Film Festival.
That win in New York confirmed that her career wasn't going to follow the expected commercial path. So she started looking for projects that would challenge her physical and mental endurance.
In 2022, she took on the challenge of leading the revival of one of horror's most iconic franchises. In the new version of Hellraiser, she played Riley McKendry, a young woman in recovery who must face the Cenobites. The shoot took place in Serbia under difficult weather conditions and with long prosthetic makeup sessions.
Horror was her next logical step.
During 2023, she diversified her range by appearing in the film Sitting in Bars with Cake. It was a necessary change of tone after the intensity of her earlier work. But she didn't entirely leave dark drama behind. That same year, she joined the cast of the fourth season of For All Mankind, playing a young woman who works in the mines of Mars.
To prepare for the Apple TV+ series, she had to train in sets simulating reduced gravity. **The budget for each episode exceeded 10 million dollars**, and the production required a commitment to staying on closed sets for months. In 2024, she finished filming the drama Hell House under the direction of Andrew Wonder.
