Synopsis of Wayne

Wayne McCullough Jr. is 16 years old and currently lives in Brockton, Massachusetts. His father has died, and the Pontiac Trans Am from 79 that belonged to him has disappeared, stolen. Wayne decides to get it back and hops on a dirt bike bound for Ocala, Florida, where the car is located. He is joined by Del, a girl from Brockton he likes, and they begin sharing the journey. Together they travel down highways and encounter a cast of quirky characters who complicate every step of the way. The series follows a search for an object tied to the late father, in which the lead combines determination with the feelings Del stirs in him. Mark McKenna plays Wayne and Ciara Bravo plays Del, in a YouTube Premium production created by Shawn Simmons.

Trivia about Wayne

The series had its world premiere on September 23, 2018 at the second Tribeca TV Festival in New York, followed by a conversation with part of the cast and crew.

The first episode drew more than 10 million views in the five days following its release.

The series earned a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average of 8/10 based on 13 reviews.

Critic Ben Travers of IndieWire gave the series an "A−" rating in a positive review.

Amazon Prime Video added the series on November 6, 2020, then removed it, and it is currently available to watch on Netflix.

Creator Shawn Simmons, a native of Brockton, Massachusetts, said he wrote the opening episode of a second season and mapped out the rest of the story, but Amazon never greenlit it.

The series was canceled after its first ten episodes because YouTube Premium changed its strategy and stopped focusing on scripted fiction productions.

Simmons explained that the fictional school Hagler High takes its name from boxer Marvin Hagler; the building used for filming is actually Brockton High School, and its mascot is the Boxers.
