Synopsis of Black Sails

The pirate adventures of Captain Flint and his men twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic “Treasure Island.” Flint, the most brilliant and most feared pirate captain of his day, takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew who goes by the name John Silver. Threatened with extinction on all sides, they fight for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day – a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality.

Trivia about Black Sails

More than three hundred workers were needed to build the ships and their details.

In early May 2016, a fire destroyed one of the ships at the Cape Town Studios and caused massive damage to part of the sets.

Starz renewed the series for a ten-episode second season six months before the first season premiered, thanks to the strong fan reaction at San Diego Comic-Con.

The second season earned a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, with 8 reviews and an average rating of 8.7/10.

The first season received mixed reviews: on Metacritic it scores 58 out of 100 based on 27 critics.

The series won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Visual Effects in 2014.

Before filming began, the cast spent two or three weeks at a pirate camp in Cape Town, training with physical conditioning, swordplay and fight choreography.

For an underwater sequence in season four, three different sets were built in three separate water tanks, and filming took up the entire season.
