Jessica Parker Kennedy

Jessica Parker Kennedy was born in Calgary in 1984, and her first significant paycheck came from a Christmas TV movie. In 2006, she played Lucy the elf in Santa Baby. It was a modest start, but enough to show that her future lay on the sets of Vancouver.

Canada's film and TV industry runs on a steady stream of supporting roles, and Kennedy wasted no time landing one. In 2008 she appeared in Smallville as Bette Sans Souci. That guest turn in the eighth season of the CW series gave her a foothold in superhero productions before the genre flooded the screen.

Television was her refuge.

She appeared in The Secret Circle in 2011, playing Melissa Glaser. The series lasted only one season, but it got casting directors to take note of her name for bigger physical projects. Kennedy has always had a presence that makes up for her height with an extremely direct gaze in front of the camera.

The Harsh Reality of Nassau

In 2014, the project that permanently changed the course of her career arrived. Starz premiered Black Sails, and she took on the role of Max. She was a complex character who starts out as a prostitute on a lawless island and ends up controlling the financial strings of piracy in the Bahamas.

Filming in Cape Town over four years required a level of exposure she had never experienced before. But Kennedy handled Max's evolution while avoiding the heavy-handed strokes of melodrama. She appeared in thirty-eight episodes until the series ended in 2017 with a firm conclusion and no possibility of continuation.

That's where her luck changed.

After leaving behind period corsets, she returned to the DC Comics universe. In 2018, she joined the cast of The Flash to play Nora West-Allen. The role of the lead character's daughter arriving from the future gave her global visibility, which streaming platforms amplified immediately.

From speedsters to Greek mythology

Her work on the CW series continued until 2023, with recurring appearances she balanced with more independent projects. In 2021, she shot See for Me, a thriller in which she played a support operator for blind people. It was a small production, shot largely indoors during the months of pandemic restrictions.

In 2022, she joined Jeff Bridges in the action series The Old Man. Her role as Maya showed her in a much drier register, far from the visual effects and colorful costumes. And the bet paid off.

The production of Percy Jackson and the Olympians chose her to play Medusa in 2024. For this role, Kennedy had to shoot with a motion-capture rig on her head to simulate the snakes. It was a complex technical process carried out at the Vancouver studios under the supervision of the visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic.

In 2024, the actress wrapped her work on the second season of The Old Man under a contract that included night shoot clauses on location in California. The show's total budget topped $15 million per episode.
