Laura Vandervoort was seven years old when she decided she wanted to act. It wasn't a childhood whim. She started out in commercials and small Canadian series such as Goosebumps, because in Toronto the industry was looking for young performers with the discipline she already had at home.
She holds a second-degree black belt in karate.
That physical foundation shaped her approach to working in front of the camera. In 2004 she landed the role of Sadie Harrison in the series Instant Star. The show ran for four seasons and taught her the rhythm of daily shoots before she made her push for Hollywood.
But the real change came in 2007 when she moved to Los Angeles.
She joined the seventh season of Smallville to play Kara Zor-El. It was not an easy character to fit into a storyline that had already been running for years. Her take on Supergirl avoided unnecessary flourishes and focused on a dry, understated strength that won over the comic book fans. She signed on as a regular for just one season, but her impact kept her tied to the franchise for years.
After wrapping her run as a superheroine, she looked for projects where her physicality was a storytelling tool. In 2009 she joined the cast of the remake of V. She played Lisa, a character who had to navigate between alien coldness and human empathy. The series was canceled after two seasons, but it allowed her to establish herself in the American market without relying on her past in Canada.
In 2014, she landed Bitten.
Here she took on the weight of the entire storyline as Elena Michaels. She was the only female werewolf in that television universe and performed high-intensity action scenes for three years. At this point in her career, she began to take an interest in the technical processes and control of projects.
She founded her own production company, Brave Maiden Productions.
Under this banner, she sought stories that moved away from the blonde action heroine image. In 2019 she starred in the remake of Rabid, directed by the Soska sisters. It was a bet on raw body horror. The movie required hours of prosthetic makeup and an emotional commitment that had nothing to do with her earlier work in mainstream television.
Starting in 2020, her focus shifted toward directing and executive producing. She directed the short film Age of Dysphoria and began choosing supporting roles in series with a more mature tone. In 2021, she worked on the thriller Trigger Point alongside Barry Pepper, and in 2022 she took part in the sports drama Black Ice.
And the strategy of diversifying paid off.
In 2023, she joined the cast of the series Sullivan’s Crossing, and in 2024 she appeared in The Way Home. She no longer seeks the mass exposure that comes with superhero capes. She prefers to balance acting with writing and developing scripts, and with seeking funding for independent projects in Canada.
In 2025, her schedule focused on developing content for streaming platforms from her base in Los Angeles. The budget of her latest independent productions stays below three million dollars per film to ensure full creative control over the final cut.
