Aaron Ashmore was born one minute before his twin brother Shawn. That small biological head start at 1979 seems to have set the tone for a career built on patience and hard graft in the Canadian industry. While his brother was flying with the X-Men on the big screen, Aaron was working the TV sets of Toronto to build a career of his own.
In 1991, he had his first experience with a professional camera in the movie Married to It. It was a tiny role, but it taught him how a shoot works from the inside. Throughout the nineties, he moved from one series to another without making much noise.
It was not a bed of roses.
He appeared in youth productions such as Are You Afraid of the Dark? and Animorphs, where he learned to navigate the fantasy genre. But his real breakthrough came when the CW network was looking for a familiar face for its flagship Superman series.
In 2006, he landed on the set of Smallville to play Jimmy Olsen. The pressure was high because the character is a key piece of the DC universe. Aaron chose to move away from the clumsy kid with a camera around his neck cliché and give him an emotional depth that was not in the original script.
He played the photographer for three full seasons. His departure from the series in 2009 was a blow to the audience but also a creative liberation. The actor needed to break away from teen storylines to explore darker roles.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2011, he joined the cast of Warehouse 13 as Steve Jinks. The character was a government agent with an instinctive ability to detect lies. Aaron used very precise, restrained gestures to convey that psychological weight. The actor prefers silence to unnecessary dramatic emphasis.
Science fiction became his natural habitat. In 2015, he took on the role of John Jaqobis in the series Killjoys. The production lasted five years and allowed him to explore pure physical action in a setting of spaceships and galactic bounty hunters. He shot exactly fifty episodes before the series ended in 2019.
But the streaming market changed the game. In 2020, he joined the Netflix universe with Locke & Key, playing Duncan Locke. The role required him to show the vulnerability of a man who has forgotten his past because of a family curse.
He is a quiet method actor.
In 2023 he joined the medical drama Skymed, where he plays Wheezer, a veteran rescue pilot. The series is shot in extreme weather conditions in northern Canada. The production contracts for this series include specific thermal safety clauses, since temperatures regularly drop below minus twenty degrees during outdoor shoot days.
