Julian Richings arrived in Toronto in 1984 with a suitcase and a look that casting directors didn't quite know how to place.
Born in Oxford in 1956, his theater training in Britain gave him the tools to turn his extreme thinness and sharp features into a competitive advantage. But it was Canadian cinema that truly understood his presence could unsettle and fascinate at the same time.
In 1996, he played Bucky Haight in Hard Core Logo. That role as a punk legend on the decline showed that his physical fragility hid an electric intensity. And it was precisely that mix that caught the attention of horror and science fiction producers in the late nineties.
Richings is not a typical method actor.
During the shoot of Cube in 1997, he spent hours in a claustrophobic setting to play Alderson. His participation was brief but necessary to set the film's tone. Richings has a rare ability to give weight to characters who barely have ten minutes on screen.
In 2003, he worked under Mike Mitchell in Wrong Turn, playing Three Finger. That production required makeup sessions lasting more than five hours a day. But the actor took on the challenge without complaint, despite the extreme conditions on set in the Ontario forests.
The industry sees him as a good luck charm.
In 2010, he first appeared in the series Supernatural, playing Death. His entrance, stepping out of a white Cadillac while a version of Jen Titus plays, is studied today in film schools for its rhythmic precision. That role brought him an international visibility that theater had not given him until then.
And despite the fame television brought him, he never abandoned low-budget projects. In 2015, he appeared in Robert Eggers' The Witch. The director sought historical authenticity, which Richings' face conveyed naturally without the need for heavy artifice.
Before filming, he reads the script looking for the silences in his character. He believes what an actor doesn't say is far more important than their lines of dialogue. So he often suggests cuts to his own text to gain visual impact.
In 2020, he starred in Anything for Jackson. This time he played a doctor who performs a satanic ritual in his home. The shoot took place in the middle of a Canadian winter, with temperatures dropping below minus twenty degrees.
But the cold didn't slow down his work pace.
In 2023, he joined the cast of Beau is Afraid under the direction of Ari Aster. In this A24 production, he shared scenes with Joaquin Phoenix in a setting of psychological surrealism. The production team notes that Richings shot his scenes on locations in Montreal following a strict twelve-hour daily schedule.
His contract for that film included standard clauses on travel and technical shooting diets. The film's total budget reached 35 million dollars.
