Athena Karkanis started out doing video game voice work for Ubisoft long before her face appeared on movie theater posters. In 2005, she voiced Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas and discovered that the anonymity of the recording booth paid the bills.
And the gamble paid off.
That gift for transforming her voice opened the door to commercial horror films for her. In 2007, she played Special Agent Lindsey Perez in Saw IV, a role that continued through the sixth installment of the franchise in 2009. It was physical work, far from the glamour Hollywood usually sells to up-and-coming actresses. She performed her action scenes without stunt doubles in most shots, which caught the attention of genre producers.
Canadian television was her training ground for years. Between 2008 and 2010, she appeared in The Border, a police drama with a frantic shooting pace and minimal room for error. But she wasn't desperately chasing a lead role.
She preferred to take on supporting roles in productions such as Lost Girl in 2011 or Low Winter Sun in 2013. In the latter, she played Dani Kahlil and carried the dramatic weight opposite actors such as Mark Strong. The series was canceled after a single season, but Karkanis's name was already on the radar of casting directors in Los Angeles.
In 2015, she joined the cast of The Expanse to play Octavia Muss.
Her time in science fiction was brief, but it taught her how big productions with complex visual effects worked. So when the script for her next major project arrived, she already knew her way around green-screen environments.
The premiere of Manifest in 2018 changed her career for good. Over four seasons, she played Grace Stone, a character who faced initial rejection from part of the audience before gaining weight in the main storyline. Filming for the series wrapped in 2023 after it was rescued by a streaming platform.
It was an exhausting production process.
In 2024, she returned to the Star Wars universe, voicing several characters in the expansion of the video game The Old Republic. Karkanis speaks seven languages, and that linguistic skill lets her work in markets that other actors don't even consider because of accent barriers. She speaks Greek, Arabic, Spanish and French fluently, which multiplies her opportunities in the international market.
Her academic background has nothing to do with the performing arts. She graduated with a degree in Political Science from McGill University before deciding her place was in front of a camera. In 2025, her work focused on independent productions filmed in Toronto with budgets under two million dollars.
