Devon Bostick never had to look for his calling outside the home. His mother, Stephanie Gorin, worked as a casting director, and his father, Joe Bostick, was an actor. So the film set was his personal daycare from the late nineties on.
In 2003 he took part in The Truth About Head. It was his first real contact with the Canadian film industry. It was not an explosive start, but it taught him how the waiting time between takes worked.
The Toronto industry is small and demanding.
By age fourteen he already had appearances in national television series. But his real education came with Adoration in 2008. Working under Atom Egoyan forced him to drop the mannerisms of youthful acting, because Canadian auteur cinema doesn't tolerate major tonal mistakes.
In 2010, he took on the role of Rodrick Heffley in Diary of a Wimpy Kid. No one expected a supporting character in a children's book adaptation to make such an impact. But Bostick brought a cynical charm that connected with an entire generation of viewers.
Three consecutive movies cemented his image as the troublesome older brother of half the world. The paychecks from these productions allowed him to choose projects with greater creative freedom in the years that followed. And his bet on independent cinema began to pay off.
In 2012 he starred in Dead Before Dawn 3D. It was an attempt to explore horror with a touch of dark comedy. But critics were not kind to the film, and it went largely unnoticed in commercial theaters.
Physical comedy requires absolute technical precision.
Television gave him the break he needed in 2014 with The 100. He played Jasper Jordan for four seasons. Shooting in the forests of British Columbia was physically exhausting, since fourteen-hour days in the rain are the norm on productions for The CW network.
In 2017 he worked with Bong Joon-ho on Okja. It was a Netflix production that took him to South Korea and New York. That experience changed the way he saw digital distribution and the influence of streaming platforms in funding risky projects.
Bostick then decided to diversify his interests. He began writing his own scripts and directing experimental short films. In 2020 he took part in Words on Bathroom Walls, playing a character with a much darker and more realistic edge.
Art-house cinema demands a different kind of quiet.
In 2023, he played physicist Seth Neddermeyer in Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan was looking for faces that conveyed a restless intelligence, and Bostick fit the profile. He shot his scenes in New Mexico under extreme security to prevent any leak of the original script.
In 2024 he joined the cast of the series Fubar alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. Production of the second season was set in Toronto with an estimated budget of $3.8 million per episode.
