The Girl Who Hated High School

Dylan Gelula dropped out at sixteen because she couldn't stand the atmosphere of Philadelphia classrooms. It wasn't an unfounded burst of teenage rebellion. It was a pragmatic decision by someone who already understood that her pace of life didn't fit the schedule of secondary school.

She moved to Los Angeles shortly after to try to work in what she loved. But the early years were not easy, and she went through the usual cycle of failed auditions and tiny parts. Her first real break came in 2011 with a brief appearance on the series Are We There Yet?, though that was only a surface-level contact with the industry.

The industry was quick to buy her feigned indifference.

It was in 2014 that her name started to circulate in casting offices thanks to Jennifer Falls. But the real turning point came when Tina Fey chose her to play Xanthippe Lannister Papariani in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015). Gelula built a character who was pure teenage venom, a mix of New York privilege and cynicism that worked as the perfect counterpoint to the lead's absurd cheerfulness.

That role typecast her for a while as the sarcastic girl who scorns everything around her. She took advantage of it to refine an acting style based on gestural minimalism.

Cynicism as a Trademark

In 2016, she decided independent film was where she could take the biggest risks. She starred in First Girl I Loved, which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and in which she played a young photographer discovering her sexuality. The project was shot on a minimal budget with an honesty that caught American critics off guard.

And the gamble paid off.

Gelula avoids intense or overacted performances. She prefers to work from restraint, letting viewers guess what her character is thinking through silences or sidelong glances. This gift for dry comedy led to her role in Support the Girls (2018), where she shared the screen with Regina Hall under the direction of Andrew Bujalski.

But her career isn't limited to auteur comedy. Between 2019 and 2020, she took on projects as different as the horror film Daniel Isn’t Real and the series Shameless. In the latter, she played Megan, showing she could fit into productions with a much rawer and less polished tone than Netflix's satires.

Television has always been her financial safety net.

In 2021, she joined the cast of Hacks as a young writer who clashes head-on with the old guard of comedy in Las Vegas. Her character brings the generational clash between boomers and Gen Z to the table, a territory where Gelula moves with an unsettling ease.

Her Leap into Genre Film and Nicolas Cage

The year 2023 marked a shift in the scale of her film projects. She joined Dream Scenario, an A24 production directed by Kristoffer Borgli and starring Nicolas Cage. In this satire about viral fame, she plays a marketing assistant who tries to capitalize on the phenomenon of a professor who appears in everyone's dreams.

The scene she shares with Cage in an apartment is one of the film's most awkward and talked-about moments. Gelula handles the sexual tension and absurdity with a technical precision that avoids falling into caricature, which is no small feat when your scene partner is an actor as expansive as Cage.

He isn't after fame; he's after control over his time.

By 2024, her presence in genre film was cemented with her role in Smile 2. In this psychological horror sequel, she plays the lead's best friend, a tormented pop star. The shoot demanded a level of physical and emotional energy far beyond her previous work in fast-paced indie dialogue films.

Dylan Gelula keeps a low profile on social media and avoids the traditional Hollywood celebrity circuit. She lives in Los Angeles and tends to choose projects based more on the quality of the script than on box-office potential. In 2025, her upcoming release is The Threesome, a comedy that revisits relationship dynamics from a sharp, acidic angle.

Filming on this latter movie wrapped in the summer of 2024 after seven weeks of shooting on locations in New Jersey.
