Synopsis of Frontier

Canada, late eighteenth century. Declan Harp is an outlaw with an Irish father and a Native mother who lives outside the law. His homeland is dominated by the Hudson's Bay Company, which controls the fur trade and has become so corrupt that it resorts to illegal activities to get rich. Declan wants to break that monopoly and sets out to disrupt its business. The series explores the North American fur trade of the era, a world where money, violence and colonial ambition collide. Jason Momoa stars as Declan in this production created by Brad Peyton, Peter Blackie and Rob Blackie and co-produced by Discovery Canada and Netflix.

Trivia about Frontier

Frontier was the first original scripted fiction production from the Discovery Canada channel, co-produced with Netflix.

Bell Media confirmed that the series would air in 4K through the Discover Go app, exclusively on Samsung 4K smart TVs.

Filming took place in several locations in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Ontario, as well as Cornwall and Northumberland in the United Kingdom.

An exclusivity agreement kept the series from being available on Netflix Canada until 2017.

John Doyle of The Globe and Mail described it as an action-packed, straightforward and highly entertaining account of the ruthless people who founded the country by plundering it.

Metacritic gave the series an average score of 52 out of 100, based on reviews from 11 critics.

Frontier's fourth season never came to be: its cancellation was reported in 2019, after Jason Momoa had initially hinted that it would continue and Jessica Matten announced they would not return.

Frontier received 19 nominations on IMDb, including nods at the Canadian Screen Awards, the Directors Guild of Canada Awards and the UBCP/ACTRA Awards, although no wins are listed here.
