Synopsis of The Last Kingdom

In the 9th century, what is now England is split into several independent kingdoms, and much of its land falls into the hands of a large Viking army led by Guthrum and Ubba Ragnarsson. Uhtred is a Saxon warrior raised by Danes who dreams of reclaiming Bebbanburg, the fortress that is rightfully his by birth. To do so, he enters the service of King Alfred of Wessex, who wants to unite the English peoples against the invaders. Created by Stephen Butchard based on Bernard Cornwell's novels, the series airs on BBC Two and Netflix and stars Alexander Dreymon. Its starting point is a man caught between two peoples, forced to decide where his loyalties lie as war redraws the map of medieval Britain.

Trivia about The Last Kingdom

A replica of a Viking ship called Havhingsten fra Glendalough was used for the scenes of Vikings at sea. It is the only filming detail this quote provides.

The series was filmed mainly in Hungary, with most scenes shot on about eight acres near Budapest owned by Korda Studios, including its medieval village.

Season one earned a 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews from 31 critics, with an average score of 7.61/10.

The first season aired in Catalonia on TV3 on July 24, 2017, a date later than its premiere in the United Kingdom.

Bernard Cornwell, author of the novels the series is based on, said he had been offered a cameo appearance in the third season.

The series ended after five seasons and 46 episodes; on April 14, 2023, Netflix premiered the two-hour film «Seven Kings Must Die» as a sequel and conclusion to the story.

The switch to a movie format led to several of the series' regular characters being cut, including Lady Aelswith, King Edward, Lady Aelfwynn, Cynlaef, Stiorra and Young Uhtred.
