Synopsis of The Queen's Gambit

In 1950s Kentucky, Beth Harmon, a nine-year-old girl, loses her mother in a car accident and ends up at the Methuen Home for Girls in Lexington. There, the janitor, Mr. Shaibel, welcomes her and teaches her to play chess. Beth discovers she has an extraordinary talent for the game, but at the boarding school she is given tranquilizer pills every day, which eventually become an addiction. The series thus explores the tension between her ambition to become the best female chess player in the world and her struggle against dependency. Created by Scott Frank and Allan Scott, the series airs on Netflix and stars Anya Taylor-Joy.

Trivia about The Queen's Gambit

Allan Scott bought the screenplay rights from Walter Tevis's widow in 1992, years before the series reached the screen.

Bruce Pandolfini, one of the consultants, advised Walter Tevis before the novel was published and suggested the title "The Queen's Gambit."

Garry Kasparov worked on key moments of the plot, such as the real-life game from 1998 between Arshak Petrosian and Vladimir Akopian, which was retouched to showcase Beth's skill.

Much of the filming took place in Berlin, because its interiors could stand in for locations such as Las Vegas, Moscow and Paris.

The exterior of Lexington's Henry Clay High School was actually filmed at the Max Taut Schule.

Scott Frank wanted a solo piano score, but in the end he opted with Carlos Rafael Rivera for a full orchestra.

On November 23, 2020, Netflix announced that the miniseries had been watched by 62 million households since its premiere.

U.S. company Goliath Games said its chess set sales jumped more than 1,000 percent thanks to the series.
