Scott Frank was born in Florida in 1960. He studied at the University of California in Santa Cruz and started out writing scripts that others shot. His first big break came with Little Man Tate in 1991. Jodie Foster directed that story about a child prodigy that Frank wrote based on his own sense of intellectual isolation.
But his true mastery emerged when he came across the prose of Elmore Leonard.
In 1995, he wrote Get Shorty. Three years later he signed the screenplay for Out of Sight for Steven Soderbergh. He made the dialogue flow with a cadence that seemed improvised (though every comma was in its place). That work earned him his first Oscar nomination and established him as the best adapter of noir novels in Hollywood.
And the industry took notice.
In 2002, he collaborated with Steven Spielberg on Minority Report. It was a massive box office hit that grossed $358 million. Frank proved he could handle gigantic budgets without losing precision in the structure of the story. But his ambition went beyond handing finished pages over to other directors.
Not everything was high-end assignments.
For years, Frank worked as a script doctor. He earned fortunes fixing other people's stories without appearing in the credits. In 2007, he decided he no longer wanted to hand his best ideas to others, and he directed The Lookout. It was a stark debut. Joseph Gordon-Levitt starred in this thriller where silence mattered more than gunfire.
Because Frank preferred stories about broken characters.
In 2014, he wrote and directed A Walk Among the Tombstones with Liam Neeson. The film grossed $62 million worldwide. The tone was dark and the pacing deliberate. It was the definitive proof that his style sought not the approval of the mainstream audience but the honesty of the classic noir genre.
In 2017, he co-wrote Logan. It was the first time a superhero movie earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay. Frank eliminated the CGI and digital effects to write a twilight western. James Mangold fully trusted his vision of a weary hero who just wants a dignified ending.
Chess changed everything.
In 2020, he premiered The Queen's Gambit on Netflix. He wrote and directed all seven episodes of the miniseries. The project became a global phenomenon with 62 million views in its first 28 days. Frank proved that audiences could stay hooked on a chessboard when the psychological tension was well built.
In 2024, he premiered Monsieur Spade with Clive Owen. The series was shot entirely in France over the previous year. The script brought back detective Sam Spade in his forced retirement in the south of the country. The production employed a crew of 150 people in the Occitanie region.
