Synopsis of Dept. Q

Carl Morck, a chief inspector with the Edinburgh police, returns to work four months after being shot in an ambush. In the same attack, his partner James Hardy was left paralyzed and a young officer was killed. His colleagues give him a cold welcome, as they see him as arrogant and unsociable. Meanwhile, the Scottish Government wants to improve the police's image by solving old cases, and offers Morck's boss, Moira Jacobson, a considerable budget to create a new unit. Jacobson, however, diverts almost all of the money to her own department and assigns Morck as the only officer to review a large number of unsolved cases. The series, created by Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani, streams on Netflix and stars Matthew Goode.

Trivia about Dept. Q

The series changes the setting of the original novel: instead of Copenhagen, it takes place in Edinburgh. This was announced on April 27, 2023.

Scenes set at the Jennings' house were shot at the docks in Burntisland, in Fife, although the story places them on the fictional island of Mhòr.

Rotten Tomatoes gives the series an approval rating of 87%, based on 49 critic reviews.

In the United States, the series ranked seventh on Netflix's chart during the week of June 2 to June 8, 2025.

Entertainment Weekly gave the series an A− grade in a review written by Kristen Baldwin.

Filming for the first season lasted six months, was based at the FirstStage studios in Leith, and used locations across twelve neighborhoods in Edinburgh and East Lothian.

Netflix renewed «Dept. Q» for a second season in August 2025, which will be filmed again in Edinburgh.

Season two will add Aisling Franciosi, Greg Wise, Nicholas Rowe, Tony Curran, Hamish Clark, Alex Ferns, Ross Anderson, Rebecca Root, Isla Johnston and Amy Brenneman to the cast.
