Synopsis of The Outsider

Ralph Anderson is a detective with the Cherokee City police in Georgia who has yet to get over the death of his son. When the mutilated body of an eleven-year-old boy turns up in the state's forests, Ralph takes on a case that seems simple on the surface. To move the investigation forward, he turns to Holly Gibney, a private investigator with an unusually sharp memory and perception. Together, they must question everything they believe is real. But as they dig deeper, an insidious supernatural force begins to creep into the case. The series, created by Richard Price and aired on HBO, blends police procedural with horror.

Trivia about The Outsider

Stephen King confirmed in October 2020 that there would be a second season, but HBO canceled the series in November of that same year.

The series has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 7.7 out of 10 based on 77 reviews.

Filming took place in the Atlanta metropolitan area, with scenes shot at Emory University and in towns such as Canton, Decatur, Norcross and Stockbridge.

Cynthia Erivo played Holly Gibney, a character Stephen King had written as white; Richard Price explained that Jason Bateman and HBO wanted her for the role from an early stage.

Jason Bateman served as an executive producer and directed the first two episodes of the series, in addition to playing Terry Maitland.

Jason Bateman received a 2020 Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his work on "The Outsider."

"The Outsider" earned three nominations at the 2021 Critics' Choice Super Awards, including Best Horror Series and recognition for Ben Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo.

The series received nominations at the 2021 Critics' Choice Television Awards and the Satellite Awards, both in categories related to Cynthia Erivo's performance or to the series itself.
