Synopsis of Mare of Easttown

Mare Sheehan is a detective in Easttown, a fictional residential neighborhood in Pennsylvania, on the outskirts of Philadelphia. Twenty-five years ago, she sank the basket that won her high school its first state championship, and the town still remembers her for it. Now, as she investigates the recent murder of a teenage mother, her private life begins to fall apart. Adding to the pressure, she has failed to find another missing young woman. Created by Brad Ingelsby and aired on HBO, the miniseries follows a investigator who must solve the case without letting her family and community completely fall apart.

Trivia about Mare of Easttown

Winslet insisted on using the "Delco" accent, even though it was very difficult to learn, because she believed the community was an important character in the story.

To prepare for the role of Colin Zabel, Evan Peters toured the Marple Township police department and worked with dialect coach Susanne Sulby.

Ingelsby chose the name Easttown because, in his words, it sounded like a very generic town name.

The season finale drew four million viewers over the holiday weekend on HBO and HBO Max, setting the record for the most-watched HBO Max original series episode in its first 24 hours.

The series received sixteen nominations at the 73th Primetime Emmy Awards and won four, including those for Winslet, Nicholson and Peters.

In July 2026, it was announced that Julianne Nicholson would reprise her role as Mare in the second season of Task, placing both series in a shared universe.

Filming began in the fall of 2019 in the Philadelphia area, but production had to be temporarily halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and later resumed.

Kate Winslet had never held a gun before playing Mare, so she had to learn how to hold it, aim and shoot for the scenes with her character.
