Jean Smart overcame type 1 diabetes, diagnosed when she was thirteen, while building a career grounded in technical precision. She is not a method actor in the usual sense. In 1981, she made her Broadway debut playing Marlene Dietrich, and that confidence caught the attention of television casting directors.
The public knew her for her laugh.
For five years, she played Charlene Frazier in the series Designing Women. That 1986 production brought her money and fame, but also the risk of being typecast as the somewhat naive Southern woman. In 1991, she decided to leave the show in search of roles that demanded a tougher edge.
And the gamble paid off.
In the late nineties her name appeared in the credits of TV movies and minor productions. But in 2000, her role as Lana Gardner in Frasier brought her back into the media spotlight. She won two consecutive Emmy Awards for playing that volcanic, foul-mouthed woman, whose brashness contrasted with the refined lead character.
Before accepting a script, she analyzes the structure of the joke, because comedy is pure math, as she explains in her interviews about her training. In 2006, she joined the cast of 24 to play Martha Logan, a First Lady struggling with mental health issues. That performance earned her unanimous respect from dramatic critics.
The industry often overlooks actresses once they reach their fifties, but with Smart, the opposite happened.
In 2015, director Noah Hawley cast her in the second season of Fargo. That role as the matriarch of a criminal clan permanently changed her career. From there, she moved on to high-budget projects such as Legion in 2017 and Watchmen in 2019, where she played a cynical, world-weary FBI agent.
During the filming of the series Hacks in 2021, her husband Richard Gilliland died suddenly after nearly forty years of marriage. She decided to finish the production one week after the funeral. That year she received the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, as the entire industry rose to its feet to applaud her professionalism in a moment of private grief.
In 2024, the series Hacks premiered its third season, confirming her ability to draw audiences on streaming platforms. Production on the new episodes was briefly halted after the actress underwent heart surgery in February 2023. The final budget for this third season exceeded 30 million dollars.
