Doug Savant accepted the role of Matt Fielding in 1992 without knowing that Fox's network censors would ban him from kissing a man on screen for years. That character on Melrose Place put him in an awkward position for a young actor in Hollywood. He played the first openly gay man on a prime-time drama, yet his intimate life on the show was a legal gray area.
The industry didn't know what to do with him.
But Savant handled the situation with a composure that would become his personal trademark. Before arriving at that West Hollywood apartment complex, he worked on Teen Wolf in 1985 and had small appearances on Falcon Crest. Those were years of learning, when his paycheck barely covered rent in Los Angeles.
In 1997 he decided to leave Aaron Spelling's series. He didn't want to get stuck in a loop of minor storylines that gave his character no room to grow. It was a risky decision, because the late-1990s TV market was merciless toward those who walked away from success.
He spent several years jumping between TV movies and one-off roles in productions such as Outer Limits and Firefly. That uncertain stretch ended in 2004 when the script for Desperate Housewives landed in his hands. The role of Tom Scavo was meant to be recurring, but his chemistry with Felicity Huffman led producers to promote him to the main cast after the first season.
And he stayed there for eight years.
Filming the ABC series required fourteen-hour days. Savant played the husband who could handle other people's crises as well as his own on Wisteria Lane. During that time the actor kept his private life remarkably discreet (he married his co-star Laura Leighton in 1998, and the two started a family far from the spotlight).
Because Savant sees television as a craft with a long track record. When the series ended in 2012, he didn't chase full leading-man status in film. He preferred the stability of quality procedurals and steady work.
In 2016 he took part in the revival of The X-Files, playing Augustus Goldman. It was a smart move to stay on the radar of the most influential casting directors. His name in the credits today guarantees impeccable technical reliability and a shoot free of unnecessary drama off the set.
Savant doesn't need magazine covers to validate his status. In 2021 he joined the cast of Tell Me Your Secrets, playing Ed Jennings. The production had high-level production design and was shot under strict health and safety measures.
His series' syndication contract guarantees his retirement.
The reality is that he lives far from red carpet premieres and social media. In 2024, his earnings from global reruns of his past work continue to arrive in his bank account on schedule. His latest appearance on The Rookie during 2023 confirms that he remains the go-to actor for television studios in California.
