The film opens at the White House, where Dick Cheney and his team of officials and presidential staff react to the attacks of September 11, 2001. From that tense situation, the story flashes back to Wyoming in 1963. There we meet a young Cheney who has had to leave Yale University because of his alcoholism and needs to rebuild his life from scratch. He gets a job as a lineman, a physical trade far removed from offices, which marks the first step of his career. Christian Bale plays the lead and Adam McKay directs and writes the film. Cheney comes across as a discreet, unremarkable man, but his early steps already reveal an ambition that the viewer will follow throughout the film.
