Synopsis of The Newsroom

The Newsroom follows the behind-the-scenes drama of a late-night news show on Atlantis Cable News (ACN), a fictional cable news network based in New York. Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) is the show's anchor, a journalist known for avoiding anything that might upset anyone and for being difficult to work with. When he returns from vacation, he finds that much of his staff has requested transfers. His boss, Charlie Skinner (Sam Waterston), has hired his ex-girlfriend MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer) as executive producer. She arrives determined to bring real, fact-based reporting back to the newsroom. Along with Jim Harper, Maggie Jordan and the rest of the news team, MacKenzie tries to keep the show afloat as the network's commercial, political and corporate pressures collide with the personal relationships of everyone involved.

Trivia about The Newsroom

To do his research, Sorkin was invited to appear off camera on MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann in 2010 and spent some time following Hardball with Chris Matthews.
Each episode, with a script of 80 to 90 pages, took nine days to shoot, compared with the six or seven pages a day typical of broadcast network dramas.
2.1 million viewers tuned in for the U.S. premiere, one of HBO's most-watched series premieres since 2008.
Thomas Sadoski said it amused him that a scene in which his character announces the death of Osama bin Laden on an airplane had become a widely shared internet meme.
The name Leona Lansing combines those of two successful businesswomen: real estate developer Leona Helmsley and former Paramount Pictures chief executive Sherry Lansing.
Chris Matthews' son, Thomas, joined the cast as Martin Stallworth, the associate producer of the fictional show.
HBO renewed "The Newsroom" for a third season of six episodes and announced it would be the last, after the second season was cut down to nine hours due to production problems and costly reshoots.
In September 2013, Jeff Daniels announced that the series had been renewed before HBO made the official confirmation public, which led to several months of confusion about its future.
