His mother dragged him to an open casting call in London because she found him too restless at home. Dev Patel had no dramatic training and no plans to set foot on a professional set. In 2007 he landed the role of Anwar in Skins, and his face began appearing on screens watched by millions of British teenagers.
It worked on pure instinct.
In 2008 the Slumdog Millionaire phenomenon hit. Danny Boyle was looking for a lead who didn't look like a catalog model and found a skinny kid with prominent ears who could convey desperation. The film won eight Oscars, but the massive success brought an identity crisis that was hard to manage.
For years, the scripts he received at his London office were variations of the same stereotype. Casting directors only saw him as the kid from a Bombay slum or the comic relief with a heavy accent. But he decided to wait until the industry grew tired of its own prejudices.
The film The Last Airbender delivered a harsh blow to the reality of Hollywood in 2010. Critics tore the movie apart, and Patel felt lost in a 150-million-dollar production with barely any room to act. It was his first major commercial and artistic flop.
But in 2012 screenwriter Aaron Sorkin gave him a chance on the series The Newsroom. There he learned to rattle off dialogue at breakneck speed alongside veterans of the scene. That verbal workout restored the confidence he needed to choose projects with more bite.
To shoot Lion in 2016, he spent eight months getting in shape. He grew out his hair, built muscle and worked on an Australian accent that erased any trace of his past as a child actor. He earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor and proved he could carry the dramatic weight of a film on his shoulders.
The boy had disappeared.
In 2021 he starred in The Green Knight under the direction of David Lowery. It was a risky decision because the film moved away from any conventional commercial structure. Patel became the first actor of Indian descent to play a Knight of the Round Table in a major-budget production.
But his most personal project took nearly a decade to develop. In 2024 he released Monkey Man, a frenetic action film that also marked his debut as a director. Shooting in Indonesia during 2020 was utter chaos due to health restrictions and a lack of initial funding.
He broke a hand during a fight scene and had to keep filming with a screw in his bone so production wouldn't stop. Despite his physical injuries, he finished editing a film that blends Hindu mythology with raw, hard-hitting action cinema. Jordan Peele bought the distribution rights after seeing a private screening and decided to bring it to theaters around the world.
The production of Monkey Man had a final budget of $10 million.
