Nicholas Hoult was twelve years old when he sat across from Hugh Grant in About a Boy. The year was 2002, and the British film industry was looking for a face that wouldn't come across as annoying in a bittersweet comedy. That boy with bushy eyebrows and a strange gaze dodged the curse of the broken toy with striking ease.
And the gamble paid off.
His transition into adolescence was not a public trauma. In 2007, he became Tony Stonem in the series Skins. That character was a charismatic manipulator who made audiences forget the boy in the wool sweater. But auteur cinema kept knocking on his door.
Tom Ford cast him in 2009 for A Single Man. In that film, Hoult proved he could hold a close-up opposite Colin Firth without blinking. That role earned him a nomination for the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2010 and opened the doors of major studios in the United States for him.
His move into big-budget productions came with X-Men: First Class in 2011. Playing Beast required hours of makeup and exhausting physical control. So Hoult learned to act through blue prosthetics and latex without losing his expressiveness.
In 2015, he shot Mad Max: Fury Road under the direction of George Miller. His character (Nux) was a fanatic who screamed at the camera while driving toward death in the Namibian desert. The film grossed $380 million and definitively took him out of the comfort zone of the traditional British leading man.
But Hoult didn't stop there.
Not everything in his career was a commercial success. In 2013, he starred in Jack the Giant Slayer, and critics were merciless about the final result at the box office. Despite that financial setback, his name kept appearing on lists of directors seeking risk over fame.
Television gave him another space for freedom in 2020 with The Great. His portrayal of Peter III of Russia mixed cruelty with an almost charming stupidity. Hoult discovered that dark humor was his best ally in breaking away from his image as a pretty face.
His willingness to look ugly or grotesque is rare for actors of his stature. In 2024, he worked on Nosferatu with director Robert Eggers. It was a grueling shoot on European locations that demanded extreme physical commitment to bring the gothic horror of the story to life.
James Gunn chose him to play Lex Luthor in the movie Superman (2025). For this role, the actor had to shave his head and play a brainy villain, a departure from his previous work. The contract includes an absolute confidentiality clause covering the technical details of the script.
The production of this film had an estimated budget of $364 million.
