Olivia Munn

Olivia Munn didn't land in Hollywood looking for a film camera. She had a journalism degree from the University of Oklahoma and a clear plan to work in news, but she ended up at a tech channel called G4. There she hosted Attack of the Show! starting in 2006 and won over an audience that mainstream television had never taken seriously.

That show was a chaotic mix of geek culture and absurd humor. Munn moved easily between sketches and technical interviews. And the gamble paid off.

That chapter ended in 2010, when she decided the television set was too small for her dramatic ambitions. She was looking for characters who didn't rely solely on her looks.

Intelligence as her selling point

The role that changed how the industry saw her was Sloan Sabbith in The Newsroom. Aaron Sorkin gave her a character who talked faster than everyone else and knew more about economics than anyone in the newsroom. It was a dry performance that helped her shake off the model label that had followed her since the beginning of her career.

But the big screen was more elusive with her for years.

She appeared in Magic Mike in 2012 and had a brief role in Iron Man 2. In 2016, she took on the challenge of playing Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse. For that shoot, she trained six hours a day in martial arts because she wanted to perform her own stunts without relying on stunt doubles for every take.

That physical preparation didn't stop the film from receiving mediocre reviews.

The Price of Fame

The industry saw her move through big-budget franchises such as The Predator in 2018. That shoot was controversial because Munn spoke out against the presence of an actor with a criminal record, and the studio had to cut the scene. It was a brave move that cost her the silent treatment from some castmates during the international promotion at film festivals.

In 2021, her first son was born from her relationship with comedian John Mulaney.

The actress's personal life took a drastic turn in 2023 after an aggressive breast cancer diagnosis. She underwent four surgeries in ten months, including a double mastectomy, to stop the disease. She documented the entire process on social media with a clinical coolness that recalled her days as an investigative journalist.

In 2024, her role in the series Your Friends and Neighbors for Apple TV+ was announced. The contract stipulated shooting schedules adapted to her physical recovery.
