The writer who didn't want to be on camera

John Mulaney arrived at the offices of Saturday Night Live in 2008 wearing a suit that was too big for him and a notebook full of jokes about 1990s Chicago. He wasn’t looking for direct applause but for the approval of Lorne Michaels. For four years, he dedicated himself to polishing other writers’ scripts and, along with Bill Hader, building the character Stefon, a nightlife guide who could barely finish a sentence without cracking up.

Many in the industry thought he would stay behind the scenes forever. But his ability to dissect social anxiety using a classic joke structure caught the attention of the Fox network.

In 2014, he tried to bring his world to traditional sitcom format with Mulaney.

It was a total disaster. Critics tore the series apart for its lack of rhythm, and audiences turned their backs on it after just thirteen episodes. The project was dead on arrival because it tried to squeeze the acidic humor of a club comic into the rigid mold of a family-friendly production.

A Comeback on Stage

After the TV flop, he went back to what he did best. In 2015, he taped The Comeback Kid for Netflix in Chicago. There, he refined his image as a polished rich kid who is really a walking disaster. His stories about meeting Bill Clinton or buying a piece of real estate showed that his strength lay in first-person storytelling.

And the gamble paid off.

He landed an exclusive deal with the streaming platform, which allowed him to experiment with less conventional formats. In 2018, he won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for Kid Gorgeous at Radio City. That special sold out seven consecutive shows at the most famous theater in New York.

His voice also found a place in animated film. In 2018, he voiced Spider-Ham in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a performance that opened doors to bigger-budget projects. But even as his professional career climbed, his personal life was quietly falling apart.

The Change of Pace in 2020

The year 2020 marked a complete break from his public image as a flawless family man. After an intervention by his closest friends, he entered a rehab center for cocaine and alcohol addiction. The process ended with his divorce from Anna Marie Tendler and the start of a relationship with actress Olivia Munn.

Many believed his career would come to a halt because of the scandal.

But in 2023 he returned with Baby J, a raw stand-up special where he traded silk suits for street clothes. In this special, he recounted his stay in rehab and how a drug dealer saved his life by refusing to sell him more drugs. The special drew more than 12 million viewing hours in its first few days on air.

In May 2024, he premiered John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA, a live talk show that broke away from the structure of classic late-night TV. The show was taped over six consecutive nights during a comedy festival in Los Angeles. The production used a crew of six fixed cameras and a technical budget in line with cable television standards.
