Kristen Wiig arrived in New York with one suitcase and stage fright that nearly derailed her career. In 2005, she landed a spot in the cast of Saturday Night Live after training at The Groundlings improv school in Los Angeles. There she quickly learned that comedy is about rhythm, not cheap jokes.
For seven seasons, she built celebrities who bordered on the pathological. Her grimaces weren't aimed at beauty but at the viewer's discomfort. Wiig understood early on that the most effective humor comes from human pathos and from situations where nobody quite knows where to look.
Not everyone can handle seven years under that kind of pressure.
In 2012, she decided her run on NBC's show was over. She said goodbye with a dance alongside Mick Jagger while the rest of the cast escorted her toward a career beyond the television nest. But before that farewell, she had already made a mark in movies that would change the rules of the game for women in studio comedy.
In 2011, she co-wrote the screenplay for Bridesmaids with Annie Mumolo. Hollywood expected a conventional wedding movie and got a raw story about envy, financial failure and losing your way in your thirties. The film grossed more than $280 million worldwide and earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
And the gamble paid off.
After that success, she could choose smaller projects that moved away from big laughs. In 2014, she starred in The Skeleton Twins alongside Bill Hader. In this drama, she played a woman with suicidal tendencies who must reconnect with her brother. It was the moment critics stopped seeing her only as a sketch comedian and started taking her seriously as a dramatic actress.
But Wiig never abandoned the absurdity that defines her. In 2021, she teamed up with Mumolo again for the release of Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. It was a risky production, full of musical numbers and outlandish villains, that strayed far from any logical commercial structure. The film quickly became a cult favorite among fans of surreal comedy.
Writing is her way of controlling chaos.
In 2024, she took on the lead role in the series Palm Royale for Apple TV+. She plays Maxine Dellacorte, a woman trying to infiltrate high society in Palm Beach in the late 1960s. The series required massive production design and costumes that weighed nearly as much as each episode's script.
Her work in big-budget films has also had its technical and critical ups and downs. In 2020, she appeared in Wonder Woman 1984 as the villain Cheetah. The shoot demanded months of intense physical training, along with prosthetics and digital effects to transform her body in the final fight sequences.
Production on Palm Royale in 2024 was directed by Tate Taylor, and it was shot mainly on location in Florida and Los Angeles. Wiig is also credited as an executive producer on the project through her company. The series was renewed after achieving steady viewership on the streaming platform during its first quarter on air.
