Patty Jenkins spent their childhood watching fighter jets take off from military bases around the world. Their father was a combat pilot, and that family discipline explains why they endured a decade of rejection before shooting their first feature film. For years, they worked as a focus puller on commercial and music video shoots to learn how a film set really worked.
In 2003, she wrote and directed Monster on a budget of just eight million dollars. The film was shot in Florida under constant pressure because investors did not understand the physical transformation of Charlize Theron. Critics expected a commercial disaster, but the film ended up grossing 64 million dollars worldwide.
No one in Hollywood believed in a story about a lesbian serial killer.
After the success of her debut, the industry tried to pigeonhole her into low-budget dramas. Jenkins turned down dozens of mediocre scripts because she wanted a visual scale that studios were not willing to give a woman. She worked in television, directing episodes of Arrested Development and the pilot of The Killing in 2011 to keep the narrative momentum going.
And then came the silence.
Fourteen years passed before they released another movie in theaters. In 2017, they took over Wonder Woman after years of failed negotiations with various producers who feared a failure in female-led action films. The film broke the era's statistics by reaching 822 million dollars in box office earnings.
That production proved Jenkins could handle budgets of 150 million without losing control of the character. But the process was exhausting due to constant disputes over the story's tone. She wanted an optimistic heroine, while the studio was looking for something darker and more violent.
The sequel titled Wonder Woman 1984 was released in 2020 amid a global crisis that disrupted its distribution. The film had a hybrid release in theaters and on digital platforms, which limited its initial financial impact. Despite the audience divide, the director kept full creative control over the final cut.
Large-scale projects often involve development processes that last for years or end up going nowhere. Jenkins signed on in 2020 for a new installment of Star Wars titled Rogue Squadron. The project suffered several delays due to production schedule conflicts and other contractual commitments of the filmmaker.
In 2022, the studio decided to pull the film from its upcoming release schedule. Many analysts wrote off the project, but the reality of contracts in Los Angeles is far more complicated than a press headline. At this level of the industry, deals are signed and broken as easily as a camera setting is changed.
In March 2024, the director confirmed she had signed a new deal to develop the script for Rogue Squadron. Her exit from other projects, such as the new version of Cleopatra, allowed her to focus her efforts on this Disney production. Preproduction is kept under strict confidentiality agreements, and no shooting date has been set on the official schedule.
