Laura Dern was legally emancipated at thirteen so she could work without the hour restrictions placed on minors. It was a purely logistical decision. Her parents, Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, had taught her that on a film set you aren't there to shine but to serve the story.
Risk was in her DNA.
In 1986, David Lynch gave her the role of Sandy Williams in Blue Velvet. That collaboration was no lucky accident. Lynch found in her the girl next door who could stare into the abyss without blinking (and who also understood surrealism as an everyday thing). They reunited in 1990 for Wild at Heart, where violence and eroticism pulled her away for good from the teen promise of her generation.
Steven Spielberg cast her in 1993 for Jurassic Park because he needed a scientist who seemed real and not a decorative addition to the script. The film grossed $914 million on its original release. That massive success gave her the financial freedom to choose projects that any agent in Los Angeles would have called career suicide.
In 1997, she appeared in the Ellen episode where the character played by Ellen DeGeneres publicly came out as gay. Dern played the woman who helped her through that process. The industry's reaction was violent and out of proportion. She lost contracts, received death threats, and her phone stopped ringing for almost three years because producers were afraid of retaliation from conservative groups.
But the industry has a short memory.
She returned to independent film and prestige television with the series Enlightened in 2011. In that project, she not only acted but also served as creator and producer alongside Mike White. The series ran for two seasons but earned her the respect of critics in Europe and the United States (winning a Golden Globe along the way).
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017, the premiere of Big Little Lies on HBO put her at the center of the global conversation. Her character, Renata Klein, was a volcanic businesswoman who refused to apologize for her ambition. It was on that shoot that she bonded with Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman to push for equal pay and better conditions for women on film crews.
In 2019, she starred in Marriage Story under the direction of Noah Baumbach. Her performance as Nora Fanshaw, a relentless divorce lawyer, earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the 2020 ceremony. Before accepting the award, she had already signed on to return to the Jurassic franchise with Jurassic World Dominion, released in 2022.
In 2024, she premiered the series Palm Royale, where she also serves as executive producer through her company Jaywalker Pictures. She founded the company with Jayme Lemons to control her own fiction projects and manage the intellectual property rights to her scripts. The distribution deal with Apple TV+ secures funding for her next three in-development projects.
