A young woman walks alone up a mountain with a huge backpack on her back. Gasping from exhaustion and pain, she stops at the edge of an embankment, takes off her boots and socks, and examines the blisters on her toes. Without meaning to, one of her boots slips away and tumbles down the slope. This is how Wild, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and starring Reese Witherspoon, begins. The protagonist, Cheryl, has decided to hike a long stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail, a long-distance mountain trail, even though she has very little hiking experience. She wants to prove she can complete the route on her own, and the trail will test her from the very first moment. The opening scenes show her determination and the physical toll she begins to pay.
