The Chelsea Hotel Refuge

Gaby Hoffmann was born in one of the rooms of New York's most famous hotel. Her mother was Viva, one of Andy Warhol's muses, and her childhood unfolded among artists and a freedom that did not fit Hollywood's standards. That room at the Chelsea Hotel shaped her view of the world.

She debuted in Field of Dreams in 1989. She was seven years old. Shortly after, she shot Uncle Buck with John Candy and became one of the recurring faces of 1990s family films. She was a child star by accident.

But early success is often a trap.

By 2002, she had decided she'd had enough of the spotlight and red carpets. She left to study literature at Bard College and settled on a farm. She spent almost a decade away from major productions because she needed to find an identity of her own outside of scripts written by middle-aged men.

Reclaiming Independent Film

Her comeback was forged on New York's alternative circuit. In 2013, she starred in Crystal Fairy & the Magical Cactus, a film shot in Chile under the real effects of psychotropic substances. It permanently shattered the image of the kid from Now and Then.

And the gamble paid off.

Her role in Girls as Caroline between 2014 and 2017 brought her visibility again. It was a raw performance that caught the attention of the most daring casting directors. Shortly after came her role in Transparent, where she played Ali Pfefferman over five seasons.

She earned two consecutive Emmy nominations for her work on the Amazon series. By 2014, the industry was taking her seriously again (but this time on her own artistic terms).

Silences and Baskets in Los Angeles

In 2021, she shot C’mon C’mon alongside Joaquin Phoenix. Filmed entirely in black and white, the movie explored motherhood from a dry, honest perspective. Hoffmann avoided any kind of performance artifice in favor of an almost documentary-style naturalism.

From 2022 to 2023, she played Claire Rothman in Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. Her character was the only woman with real power in the basketball team's front office during the eighties.

HBO canceled the series in September 2023 due to low ratings for its second season.
