Sam Baldwin is an architect who lives in Seattle with his eight-year-old son, Jonah. They have only recently moved, and grief still weighs on the house, where the father rarely speaks of his late wife. Jonah notices that his father has lost his spark and starts to come up with a plan of his own. On the other side of the country, in Baltimore, Annie Reed works as a journalist and is about to marry Walter. Every night she listens to a radio advice show, and one day the voice of a widower speaking about his wife leaves her unsettled. Jonah has a plan to get his father excited about life again, and Christmas Eve is approaching.

Trivia about Sleepless in Seattle

According to Gary Foster, the producer read well past page 25 of the script without realizing it, and by the last page he was in tears.
Jeff Arch's script was rewritten about five times during development, with several screenwriters and directors involved at different stages.
Nathan Watt was the first choice to play Jonah, but after a few days of working together, Tom Hanks found the boy disruptive on set.
Rosie O'Donnell drew inspiration from Bette Midler to play Becky, copying her way of walking and talking. Her speech was the longest of her career up to that point.

Quotes by Sleepless in Seattle

  • Mommy got sick. And it happened just like that. There was nothing anybody could do. It isn't fair. There's no reason. But if we start asking why, we'll go crazy.
  • Destiny is something we've invented because we can't stand the fact that everything that happens is accidental.
  • Shut up, shut up?! Mom never said shut up to me! Mom never yelled at me!
  • Verbal ability is a highly overrated thing in a guy, and it's our pathetic need for it that gets us into so much trouble.
  • Look, Annie... I love you. But let's leave that out of this. I don't want to be someone that you're settling for. I don't want to be someone that anyone settles for. Marriage is hard enough without bringing such low expectations into it, isn't it?
  • Move on. Right. That's what I'm going to do. In a few months, I'll be fine, I'll just grow a new heart.
