Synopsis of Masters of the Air

Masters of the Air follows the 100th Bombardment Group, a heavy bomber unit flying the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress with the U.S. Eighth Air Force, stationed in eastern England during World War II. Gale "Buck" Cleven and John "Bucky" Egan, played by Austin Butler and Callum Turner, are two of the airmen preparing for dangerous missions: bombing targets in German-occupied Europe. Anthony Boyle completes the main cast of this group of characters. The miniseries, created by John Shiban and John Orloff for Apple TV+, is based on the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller. Every mission tests the men, who try to survive while forging bonds with one another and facing the relentless brutality of air war.

«We came from every corner of the country, with a common purpose: to bring the war to Hitler's doorstep.»

Trivia about Masters of the Air

It is the third of the companion miniseries after Band of Brothers and The Pacific, and the only one of the three that did not air on HBO.

The Hollywood Reporter put the project at nine episodes and a total budget of 250 million dollars, and it was the first Apple TV+ series produced under Apple Studios.

Apple reached a deal to stream it exclusively on Apple TV+ instead of HBO, and HBO later confirmed it had decided not to move forward with the series.

3,447 shots used visual effects, and DNEG handled between 1,600 and 2,000 of them, including most of the aerial sequences.

The cockpit scenes were shot on set using virtual production, handled by Lux Machina.

The series earned three nominations at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards and won one of them.

Before filming, the cast went through a physical boot camp and flight training to build teamwork and a military mindset; the sessions began in 2021.

To recreate the Thorpe Abbotts air base, the prisoner-of-war camps and the B-17, the production built sets whose four main locations were roughly the size of a small municipal airport.
