Trivia about The Borgias
In 2010, Steven Spielberg, then heading DreamWorks Pictures, suggested turning the Borgia film into a cable television drama.
Showtime canceled the series in June 2013, one season short of the four Jordan had planned for its story arc.
The series received 16 Emmy nominations and won three awards, two of them for costume design.
Filming took place in Hungary, mainly at the Korda Studios in Etyek, a short distance west of Budapest.
Jeremy Irons initially doubted he was the right actor to play a Spaniard historically described as obese and dark-skinned.
In its first week, "The Borgias" reached 3.71 million viewers when counting on-demand viewing, reruns, and digital recordings, and posted the best premiere numbers for a new Showtime drama series in seven years.
After the cancellation, Showtime considered wrapping up the story with a two-hour movie, but ultimately dropped that project as well and kept the end of the third season as the final episode.
