Lotte Verbeek was not your typical actress when she appeared at the Berlinale in 2010. She had come from studying dance and singing in Amsterdam, but her presence in Nothing Personal (2009) suggested something far more intense. That Urszula Antoniak film earned her the Best Actress award at Locarno and put her on the radar of European casting directors.
She was born in Venlo in 1982. Before becoming an actress, she was a professional dancer, and that physical discipline shows in how she commands the space in front of the camera. Her dance training gave her complete control over her body language. In 2006, she finished her studies at the Amsterdam Academy of Theatre and Dance.
And it worked.
In 2011, she joined The Borgias to share the screen with Jeremy Irons over three seasons. She played Giulia Farnese and had to learn Italian for the role, since the production wanted realistic dialogue. That role opened the doors to major American networks for good.
But she preferred projects where the script mattered more than the paycheck.
In 2014 she joined the world of Outlander to bring Geillis Duncan to life. She is a celebrity who appears intermittently but holds much of the mystery of the Scottish storyline together. That same year she took part in The Fault in Our Stars, a production that grossed more than 300 million dollars worldwide.
Unlike other European actors, she was not typecast in period drama. In 2016 she joined Marvel's series Agent Carter to play Ana Jarvis. She brought a lightness the series needed and broke away from the femme fatale image she had carried since her early days in independent film.
Speaks five languages fluently.
This allows her to work in any country without relying on dubbing. In 2019, she shot The Coldest Game in Poland alongside Bill Pullman. It is a Cold War espionage film with a suffocating production design and a slow pace reminiscent of 1970s genre cinema.
In 2020, she starred in The Book of Vision, executive produced by Terrence Malick. Filming took place on location in Italy and Belgium. The film was directed by Carlo Hintermann and opened the Critics' Week at the Venice Film Festival that year.
In 2023 she joined the cast of FBI: International to shoot her scenes in Budapest. She played Agent Angela Erős during the show's third season. Her contract included a strict confidentiality clause covering the storyline of the final episodes.
