Katja Herbers was born into a home where silence didn't exist. Her mother was violinist Vera Beths and her father was oboist Gijs Herbers. She grew up among sheet music, tour hotels and European dressing rooms while her parents traveled across the continent. But she decided to study psychology at the University of Amsterdam before giving in to acting.
She dropped out of her career after a year.
She entered the Amsterdam Academy of Theatre and Dance and soon began working with directors of the caliber of Johan Simons. In 2002, she was already filming Pietje Bell. Her classical training in Dutch theater gave her a technical foundation that many American actors envy. She spent years working with the NTGent company, where she learned that the text is sacred and that the actor is merely a tool of the script.
In 2011, she appeared in the film De Heineken Ontvoering. It was a box office hit in her country and showed that her range went far beyond the theater stage. But the Dutch market quickly became too small for her. So she decided to try her luck in the United States without a powerful agent to back her across the ocean.
The international industry discovered her in 2014 with the series Manhattan. She played Helen Prins, a scientist caught up in the atomic bomb project. It was a dry and brilliant role. Nobody in Hollywood could figure out where this actress came from, someone who spoke flawless English with no trace of a European accent.
And then came big-budget science fiction.
In 2018, she joined the cast of Westworld to play Emily. The shoot was physically exhausting. She spent weeks under the sun in California and Utah filming horseback action scenes in extreme temperatures. The HBO series gave her the visibility she needed to start choosing her own projects instead of relying on mass auditions.
But her biggest personal gamble came in 2020 with The Columnist. In this Dutch film, she plays a writer who decides to kill the trolls harassing her on social media. The movie was shot in just 25 days on a very tight budget. It's a dark comedy that confirms Herbers prefers creative risk to the comfort of big superhero franchises.
In 2019, she began bringing Kristen Bouchard to life in Evil. The series, created by Robert and Michelle King, blends the religious procedural with modern horror. Her character is a skeptical forensic psychologist who raises four daughters while investigating alleged miracles and demonic possessions. It's a complex role that requires shifting from family drama to pure panic in a single take.
It's the longest role of her career.
During filming of the fourth season in 2023, production was halted by the writers' and actors' strikes in New York. Despite the delays, the series kept a loyal fan base on digital platforms. Herbers shot her final scenes as Kristen in 2024. The series ran for a total of 50 episodes before closing its main storyline.
For 2025, she has the release of The Vegans scheduled. It is a production directed by Jelle de Jonge that takes her back to her professional roots in the Netherlands. Filming took place mainly in locations in Utrecht during the autumn. The production had a budget of €3.5 million, partially funded by the Netherlands Film Fund.
