The 1993 anomaly

Jack Palance opened the envelope and read her name, to the astonishment of critics who took for granted the win of any of the other four British nominees. That night in March 1993 changed the public's perception of Marisa Tomei forever. It was not a misreading or a prank by the presenter, although the urban legend followed the actress for more than a decade.

She won the Oscar for playing Mona Lisa Vito in My Cousin Vinny with a mix of Brooklyn attitude and mechanical know-how no one saw coming. It was the first time a pure comedic actress broke through the Academy's wall in that category in years.

And the industry was stuck.

Before that moment, she had already appeared on television in A Different World and in minor roles that barely made use of her energy. But after the statuette, producers were unsure whether to treat her as a romantic film star or as a strong supporting actress. In 1994, she shot Only You alongside Robert Downey Jr., chasing the magic of classic comedies that Hollywood kept trying to recreate without much success.

Refuge in Independent Film

During the second half of the 1990s, she preferred to step away from the spotlight to work with directors who wanted more than a friendly face. She worked with Nick Cassavetes in Lovers and Liars in 1996 and proved that her dramatic range was as solid as her quick comic timing. But the major studios still couldn't find a clear place for her in their blockbusters.

Everything changed with the arrival of the new century.

In 2001, she appeared in In the Bedroom, directed by Todd Field. That role as a separated mother in a suffocating setting earned her unanimous critical respect and another Oscar nomination. The film grossed more than $40 million on a minimal budget and put her back on the map of international prestige.

From there, she chose her projects with a freedom few actresses of her generation could afford. In 2008 she took on the challenge of The Wrestler by Darren Aronofsky. She spent months training at strip clubs to understand the psychology of her character (a role that earned her a third Academy Award nomination).

But she never abandoned the stage.

Aunt May and Her Return to the Stage

Many younger viewers discovered her in 2016 when she appeared in Captain America: Civil War. Her version of Aunt May in the Marvel Universe broke with the image of the frail old woman from the comics, presenting a vibrant, active woman instead. She appeared in all three installments of the franchise starring Tom Holland, up to Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.

In 2024, she returned to showing her flair for sophisticated comedy in the film Upgraded (Upgraded), playing a relentless director at an auction house. Filming took place in London and New York under the direction of Carlson Young. So she keeps alternating between big-budget movies and projects where the script matters more than the paycheck.

Her stint on Broadway in 2024 with the play Oh, Mary! confirmed that the stage is still her safe place. The production sold out at the Lyceum Theatre for weeks on end. The base salary for a Broadway actor in similar productions is around $2,638 a week before extras and box office percentages.

In 2025, she wrapped her work on a drama series about the contemporary art world in New York. The production had a crew of more than two hundred people on location in Manhattan.
